SIMON THORNTON

Record & Music Making Bloke. Audio Wizard (without a hat).

Simon Thornton has been involved in making hit records since 1988 or so. Which he's thinking is quite a long time ago now.

He engineered and mixed all those Fatboy Slim records you still hear now and again. He also mixed some things that you hear less often, but are no less good. And then there are the records even he doesn't remember being involved in - that's where the list below comes in handy.

In 1999 the Fatboy Slim long-player "You've Come A Long Way, Baby" was nominated for a Grammy Award, which was lovely, but it didn't win, which is OK. The album "Palookaville" and a single from it, "Wonderful Night", also got a 'nod' (as it's called) in 2005, but neither won that year either. Hey ho.

He used to write studio hardware reviews for the UK recording magazine "Future Music" but it always took him ages so he hasn't done that for a while. He mixes stuff under the banner of "The Mix Department" which isn't so much a department as a one-man band, but he likes the name. He occasionally does interviews about things that you can then read about.

Simon is a big Pro Tools geek, and doesn't use any other system unless he really has to. When he started it was all 2" tape, Pro 16 MIDI sequencing on a Commodore 64, the Akai S900 was the new hip sampler (well it more fun than sampling using a 2 second delay unit) and Pro Tools didn't exist. If you didn't understand a word of that, don't worry, let's just say there's been some progress in the last 20 years...

Currently based and workning in both Brighton & Islington (hurrah for the Victoria Line!)

He produces, mixes, engineers, writes (sometimes), edits, masters, tweaks and generally does most things record- and music- making related. It's not just about the records though - oh no - all sorts of film and games projects are also most welcome.

He might well do many of these things for you if you offer to pay him money (and the project is good!). He also does consulting on all aspects of technical and artistic things related to the Wonderful World of Sound (which is a fancy way of saying if you give him cash he'll tell YOU what to do).

(also a member of BAFTA, don't ya know)

Email Simon.
